Summary

Years after the first coalescence, the world has reconfigured and politics have hardened. Aisling, now a reluctant leader, faces the paradox of peace: maintenance of the machine requires expansion of control, and expansion invites resistance. Miles, scarred by earlier compromises, returns as an architect of compromise and conflict alike. Their reunion forces them to confront choices they once made in hope, and to reckon with how those choices have reshaped ordinary lives.\n\nThe central struggle hinges on a new project promising abundance but also creating inequality. As urban centers surge around the machine's power, fringe communities watch their cultures erode. Personal loyalties are strained when friends become administrators, and enemies become inconvenient necessities. The plot pulls tight around core characters, showing how ideological battles are lived day by day in kitchens, workshops, and lonely guard posts.
